I’m so excited to share with you guys our new guest bedroom x home office!!! We worked with the Phoenix-based Mackenzie Collier Interiors team on this project and initially met about our goals for this room in January of 2024. We started off by determining our goals for this room. I knew I wanted:
- A serene home office, and
- A place where we could still comfortably hosts guests
Ultimately, they helped us to create a guest bedroom and home office that is beautiful and relaxing while still meeting our everyday needs of working from home and hosting the occasional guest. Since we were getting married in a few months later, we didn’t want to blow all of our money right out of the gates, so the Mackenzie Collier Interiors team provided us with a:
- To-scale, numbered floor plan of our space
- Mood board showing all of our product selections + product alternatives
- Digital shopping list
…which allowed us the flexibility to do all purchasing and room updates at our own pace. I really liked being able to do the shopping myself, so we could decide when we wanted to spend. This also made it easy to shop when things were on sale (ie. President’s Day and Memorial Day were big for this!) and so I could easily find alternates. It worked out so well for us!!
The Design Process:
The design process with the Mackenzie Collier Interiors team took about 8 weeks from start to finish. They came by the house to get an idea of what we wanted, measured every detail of the room, and presented us with a digital shopping list! It was so easy for us – I don’t think I had any revisions to their initial concepts or colors they presented us with. They did a great job understanding what we wanted!
We chose a muted color palette inspired by nature. Soft greens and blues dominate the space, creating a serene atmosphere that promotes relaxation and focus. These colors, combined with the room’s carefully chosen furnishings and decor, make the space look soooo chic and inviting.
The key to this design is its dual functionality. The space serves as a productive home office for me by day and a comfortable guest bedroom by night. Thoughtful design choices, from the vibrant wallpaper to the elegant mirror, ensure that the room remains both practical and visually appealing, whether I’m hosting a guest or catching up on work.
Here are examples of the color palette and moodboard that the MCI team presented to us:
The Challenges:
The room isn’t big enough to have both a desk/chair AND a queen sized bed, so the Mackenzie Collier Interiors team brainstormed a few solutions for this.
Structural Details: Blue Botanical Wallpaper & Shiplap
A standout feature of the room is the blue botanical wallpaper and painted shiplap in Benjamin Moore’s “Ashwood” that adorns the walls. I’m obsessed with how it turned out. We hired Ed from Desert State Homes (we found him on Thumbtack) to install the:
- Wallpaper
- Shiplap + trim
- Picture Rail
- Sconces
- Ceiling fan
The MCI team provided us with exact measuring and quantities, so all I had to do was give this information to Ed and he was able to do the job without any additional questions. The docs told him how long to cut the shiplap, where to place the picture fraim rail pegs, and where to place the sconces.
Brass Picture Rail: The Zoom Background of My Dreams
I spend a considerable amount of time on video calls during my work day, so having a polished background for my videos was super important. To enhance virtual meetings, the MCI team incorporated a brass picture rail that elegantly showcases framed artwork. This stylish addition not only elevates the aesthetic of the space but also ensures that my video calls look professional and refined. It’s a functional design element that doubles as a chic display for our favorite pieces!
To create a similar bass picture rail, you’ll need the following:
My Favorite Part: The Mango Wood Squiggle Mirror
How freakin’ cool is my full-length squiggle mirror!!! I love the classic material from the mango wood, and the fun shape of the frame.
Adding a touch of cool sophistication, the squiggle-tall mirror is a focal point in the room. Its unique design, paired with an exquisite walnut finish, brings an ethereal quality to the space. This mirror is not just a functional item but also a statement piece that adds character and charm, and will be perfect for my outfit selfies!!!
Performance Velvet Sleeper Sofa: Queen Bed
Since we don’t hosts guests very frequently, we decided a sleeper sofa would be the best option for us. I was worried about it being comfortable, but we had our first guest stay the night in this room a few weeks ago, and he literally said it was the most beautiful room he had ever been in LOL
The sleeper sofa has a queen-sized mattress and is upholstered in performance velvet, color “Celadon.” The tailored look of the sofa ensures it blends seamlessly with the transitional style of the room, making it an inviting spot for both work and relaxation.
Fun fact: the delivery team had to get the couch in the room through the WINDOW lol.

The Statement Desk!
I originally wanted a standing desk, but opted for style over function for my desk. It makes me feel like a true CEO lol.
Details I Love
- We sourced the hookson the wall while on our honeymoon in Paris
- The antique brass desk clock
- The squiggle brown marble tray on my desk
- The pleated sconces!!
- The brass framed print I had made from our engagement shoot (use code BBOOKS15 for 15% off your Artifact Uprising order!)
Our guest bedroom and home office designed in partnership with Mackenzie Collier Interiors successfully merges sophistication with functionality. They helped us to create a space that is both stylish and inviting. With its muted earth-inspired color palette and transitional design, this room offers a perfect blend of elegance and practicality, ensuring it meets all your needs while exuding timeless charm. Down the road, we’ll eventually add a storage unit and maybe add more storage to the closet.
Thanks so much to the MCI team!! You brought our dreams to life & I can’t wait to host my family & friends here!
xx
